A Brief History
GBC was formed in 1956 and has since grown to be a contemporary and vibrant church with a vision to impact lives and transform our communities for God’s glory.
We are one church on two sites i.e., GBC @IMPACT and GBC @14, along Jalan Larut and we serve multiple congregations in English, Mandarin, Hokkien and Bahasa Malaysia. Today, our ministries cater to a wide age range, from toddlers to seniors. The ministries and church life are also holistic; everyone can readily engage through worship, discipleship, service, outreach and a variety of other means.
Meet the Pastors of GBC
Senior Pastor

Pastor Yip Sew Kie joined the pastoral ministry in GBC in 2017 after 23 years in the High Tech Industrial. He graduated from UM with a BSc, and obtained his Master’s degree in Christian Studies from Malaysian Baptist Theological Seminary.
Pastor SK has been in GBC since 1993 and is married with 2 daughters.
He is one of the board of directors at the Malaysian Baptist Theological Seminary.

Pastor Liew Yean Huat joined the pastoral ministry in GBC in 2012 after 30 years in the Financial Services Sector. He graduated from USM with a BA, has post graduate diplomas in Management from Henley-Brunel and from the Malaysian Baptist Theological Seminary in Christian Studies. He served as a Deacon/Elder & later Vice-Chairman since 1997.
Pastor Yean Huat has been in GBC since 1987 and is married with 2 sons. He is the Chairman of the Penang Ministers’ Fellowship since 2016, a regional representative of the National Evangelical Christian Fellowship, serving in Prayer United Penang and Prayer United Malaysia and is the Pastor Advisor of Alpha Workplace, Penang and of prayer networks & ministries – Bible Reading Marathon, MUFW Pg, LUM-Pg.

Rev. Dr. Tony Chuang is a conference speaker, adjunct lecturer, and published writer. He earned a BSc from Ontario Tech University, a MDiv from Moody Theological Seminary, and a PhD from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. While in the U.S., he served as the Pastor of Outreach and Evangelism at Hope Community Bible Church, where he was eventually ordained as Reverend in 2020. Together with his wife Pastor Esther, they have ministered in multiple countries across four continents.
Currently, he lectures or supervises doctoral students at multiple Asian seminaries. He travels extensively to speak or teach at several conferences each year. He also oversees mission partners in a few countries under AsiaCMS. Additionally, he hones his leadership skills as the managing director of an electroplating business in Penang. He joined the Georgetown Baptist Church pastoral team as a non-salaried staff in 2023, with particular focus on the young adults and mission ministries. His favorite food is salmon sashimi.

Dr. Esther Shin Chuang is an award-winning concert pianist and gospel singer. She has ministered through music and teaching in North America, Asia, Africa, and Europe with her husband Pastor Tony. For her Bachelor and Master of Music in Piano Performance, she attended The Juilliard School, Peabody Conservatory of The Johns Hopkins University, and Manhattan School of Music. She earned a Doctor of Worship Studies from the Robert E. Webber Institute of Worship Studies.
While in the U.S., she served as a faculty of music at Moody Bible Institute and a Pastor of Music and Worship at Church of the Savior. Since relocating to Penang, she has performed in multiple concerts. She has also lectured on the theology of worship at six seminaries in Asia. She joined the Georgetown Baptist Church pastoral team as a non-salaried staff in 2023, with particular focus on the young adults and mission ministries. She has two adorable children who make life unpredictably interesting.

Pastor Daniel has been in GBC since 2001. He is married has a daughter. He joined the ministry staff in 2005 as a Youth Director after 4 years of working with students in a local college. He graduated with a B. Science Sports Science from Edith Cowan University, Perth Australia and has a Masters in Arts: Youth Ministry from Malaysian Baptist Theological Seminary. He coached the state’s squash junior players from 2001 till 2014.
Pr Daniel served as Youth Director from 2005 to 2010 and was Youth Pastor from 2011 onwards. In 2019 he took on the additional role as the Bahasa Pastor overseeing the BM congregation.
He is part of the Penang Bahasa Churches Committee working with the Indonesian Consulate to organize events for Bahasa speaking believers in the northern region. He is also part of the committee overseeing the OA ministry in Gerik, Perak.

Pastor Jessica Ong Mei Chen was called to pursue theological studies at Malaysian Baptist Theological Seminary after retirement from the marketplace. She obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Theology in 2011.
Pr Jessica was with GBC since 2010, she joined GBC pastoral ministry in 2014 as a Hokkien Ministry pastor. She is married with 3 sons.
