A BRIEF HISTORY
GBC was formed in 1956 and has since grown to be a contemporary and vibrant church with a vision to impact lives and transform our communities for God’s glory.
We are one church on two sites i.e., GBC @IMPACT and GBC @14, along Jalan Larut and we serve multiple congregations in English, Mandarin, Hokkien and Bahasa Malaysia. Today, our ministries cater to a wide age range, from toddlers to seniors. The ministries and church life are also holistic; everyone can readily engage through worship, discipleship, service, outreach and a variety of other means.
MEET THE PASTORS OF GBC
Senior Pastor

Rev Yip Sew Kie (SK Yip) is the Senior Pastor of Georgetown Baptist Church (GBC), Penang. Before entering full-time ministry, he served 23 years in the high-tech industry, including as a Director of Intel’s worldwide embedded products business, gaining extensive experience in corporate leadership and international management.
Rev. Yip graduated from the University of Malaya (UM) with a Bachelor of Science degree and later earned a Master of Christian Studies from the Malaysia Baptist Theological Seminary (MBTS). He has been part of GBC since 1993, joined the pastoral team in 2014, and was appointed Senior Pastor in 2023.
He is married with two daughters. Rev. Yip also serves on the Board of Trustees of MBTS and has a deep passion for discipleship, seeking to help believers become rooted in God’s Word and live out Christ’s mission.

Pastor Daniel has been in GBC since 2001. He is married has a daughter. He joined the ministry staff in 2005 as a Youth Director after 4 years of working with students in a local college. He graduated with a B. Science Sports Science from Edith Cowan University, Perth Australia and has a Masters in Arts: Youth Ministry from Malaysian Baptist Theological Seminary. He coached the state’s squash junior players from 2001 till 2014.
Pr Daniel served as Youth Director from 2005 to 2010 and was Youth Pastor from 2011 onwards. In 2019 he took on the additional role as the Bahasa Pastor overseeing the BM congregation.
He is part of the Penang Bahasa Churches Committee working with the Indonesian Consulate to organize events for Bahasa speaking believers in the northern region. He is also part of the committee overseeing the OA ministry in Gerik, Perak.

Rev Dr Tony Chuang is a conference speaker, adjunct lecturer, and published writer. He earned a BSc from Ontario Tech University, a MDiv from Moody Theological Seminary, and a PhD from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. While in the U.S., he served as the Pastor of Outreach and Evangelism at Hope Community Bible Church, where he was eventually ordained as Reverend in 2020. Together with his wife Pastor Esther, they have ministered in multiple countries across four continents.
Currently, he lectures or supervises doctoral students at multiple Asian seminaries. He travels extensively to speak or teach at several conferences each year. He also oversees mission partners in a few countries under AsiaCMS. Additionally, he hones his leadership skills as the managing director of an electroplating business in Penang. He joined the Georgetown Baptist Church pastoral team as a non-salaried staff in 2023, with particular focus on the young adults and mission ministries. His favorite food is salmon sashimi.

Pr Dr Esther Shin Chuang is an award-winning concert pianist and gospel singer. She has ministered through music and teaching in North America, Asia, Africa, and Europe with her husband Pastor Tony. For her Bachelor and Master of Music in Piano Performance, she attended The Juilliard School, Peabody Conservatory of The Johns Hopkins University, and Manhattan School of Music. She earned a Doctor of Worship Studies from the Robert E. Webber Institute of Worship Studies.
While in the U.S., she served as a faculty of music at Moody Bible Institute and a Pastor of Music and Worship at Church of the Savior. Since relocating to Penang, she has performed in multiple concerts. She has also lectured on the theology of worship at six seminaries in Asia. She joined the Georgetown Baptist Church pastoral team as a non-salaried staff in 2023, with particular focus on the young adults and mission ministries. She has two adorable children who make life unpredictably interesting.

Pr Dr Colin has been part of Georgetown Baptist Church since childhood and has had the privilege of growing in faith and serving the Lord within the church community. He and his wife, Kelly, have served the Lord together in various ministries over the years. They have two adult children, who are also actively serving the Lord.
A medical doctor who graduated from Kasturba Medical College in Mangalore, India, Pastor Colin currently practises as a general practitioner. He regularly preaches at Georgetown Baptist Church and serves on the Missions Committee.
Pastor Colin has a deep passion for the Word of God and a particular interest in theology and Christian apologetics. He holds a Master of Arts in Great Commission Apologetics from Malaysia Baptist Theological Seminary, Penang.
With a desire to continue serving Christ and His church, Pastor Colin joined the Georgetown Baptist Church pastoral team as a non-salaried staff member in July 2026. His desire is to faithfully proclaim God’s Word, encourage believers in their walk with Christ, and serve the church for the glory of God.

Pr Betty has been part of GBC since 1990s. She holds a Diploma in Business Studies.
During her years at GBC, she has had the privilege of serving in both the English and Hokkien congregations in various areas of ministry. Appointed as a pastor in July 2026, she desires to continue serving God and His people with humility, dependence on Him and a strong conviction in the power of prayer. She is involved in state and national prayer initiatives, including MUFW and PRPG, and hopes to see GBC grow as a praying and mission-minded church. She seeks to be faithful in both vision and practical service, and to communicate clearly what God is doing so that others may see, understand and respond. In her spare time, she enjoys reading and learning new skills that can equip her to serve more effectively.
Mandarin

Pr Khiew has been part of GBC since 2009. He is married and has a son and a daughter. He joined GBC as a member of the ministry staff in 2019, after 35 years of service in a financial institution.
He holds an MBA from the University of Portsmouth and a Graduate Diploma in Christian Studies from Malaysia Baptist Theological Seminary.
He served in GBC Chinese Church even before joining the ministry staff. In 2026, he was appointed as the pastor overseeing the Chinese Church. He is passionate about teaching and discipleship, helping believers become rooted in the Word of God.
His most treasured quote is: “I am a sinner, saved by grace.”
Mandarin

Pr Lai Lin has been part of GBC since 2003. She graduated from the University of Mississippi in the US with a BA in Business Administration and worked in two local banks, first in KL and later in Penang, before retiring as a Service Operations Manager.
In 2026, she joined the pastoral team in a non-salaried capacity, serving primarily in prayer and visitation, as well as in young adults ministry within the Mandarin congregation. She has a heart for caring for people and counts it a blessing to be a mother to two daughters. In her spare time, she also enjoys keeping active through exercise!
